Beyond capital, assess the team, operating experience and ability to develop and support a franchise network.

A master franchisee is not merely an investor able to open an outlet. Depending on the agreement, they may recruit, train and support multiple partners. The choice affects future network quality and the brand’s reputation in the territory.

Start with the role, not the candidate’s name

Write the mission before searching. Will the partner operate the first units? Can they sub-franchise? What resources are required for training and assistance? What will international head office do?

This allows comparable assessment and avoids building an agreement around a person without a suitable organisation.

Assess five complementary dimensions

1. Operating experience

Ask for concrete examples of sites managed, problems solved and teams supervised. Sector knowledge does not replace day-to-day operating ability.

2. Ability to build a team

Identify owners for operations, training, development and financial control. A good individual operator may not yet be able to support a network.

3. Available resources

Distinguish stated capital, funds actually available and operating needs. Initial units should not consume the entire support budget. Review evidence with the project’s advisers.

4. Local knowledge

Knowledge of cities, hiring, suppliers and premises adds value. Verify it through practical work and references, not only a claimed contact network.

5. Commitment to the concept

Ask about motivation, essential standards and how the candidate would respond to a rejected adaptation. Brand alignment matters as much as growth ambition.

Select using evidence

A structured interview, verifiable references, immersion, a case exercise and a candidate-prepared development plan reveal more than one persuasive meeting. For example, ask how training for a second unit would be organised while the first faces a supply problem.

Record strengths, concerns and missing information. A framework supports judgement by making differences visible and comparable.

Prefer progressive commitments

Territory, exclusivity and opening schedules should match demonstrated capacity. Stages conditional on pilot quality, staffing and financing reduce overly rapid expansion risk. Have qualified legal counsel define the conditions.

Three warning signs

  • A large opening target without staff or a support budget.
  • Refusal to provide verifiable evidence of experience or resources.
  • Plans to change the concept’s core before operating it.

Is the best-funded candidate the best choice?

Not necessarily. Capital is necessary but does not replace execution, recruitment ability or relationship quality. Look for a coherent combination.
